On June 7–8, Rylund Stewart was selected to participate in the MSSBDA (Missouri Small Schools Band Directors Association) Festival Band, an auditioned honor ensemble held at Central Methodist University in Fayette, Missouri. Students from across the state gathered for two days of intensive rehearsals, culminating in a public concert performance on the afternoon of June 8.
What made this event especially meaningful was a remarkable achievement by Rylund as a young composer. Prior to the festival, he composed an original work honoring Ms. Waldo and celebrating her retirement. He sent the piece to the festival band director early in the spring for her opinion and feedback before sharing it with Ms. Waldo. After reviewing it, she selected it for inclusion on the concert program. The work received its premiere performance by the Festival Band during the organization's inaugural event.
Having an original composition selected and performed by an auditioned State level honor ensemble is a significant accomplishment for any composer. For Rylund to receive this recognition at such a young age is an extraordinary honor and a testament to his creativity, musicianship, and dedication to his craft.
